Learn the Standard

There are several documents that form the basis for describing the standard. Get to know them intimately as they have the information you need to implement the standard. The documents for each transaction set can be found in the Specifications section. The documents to review include the following:

Logical Data Dictionary
The Logical Data Dictionary (LDD) defines every individual data point used across the various MISMO transaction sets. For each data point defined, the LDD provides the name as it is referenced in the XML, a definition of each element, the data type, a list of valid values if appropriate and the context or processes in which the element is used. If you have a question regarding what is meant by loan amount, use the LDD to learn about its definition and usage. Both Residential and Commercial MISMO maintain separate LDDs.

MISMO General Implementation Guide
MISMO has published a General Implementation Guide (I-Guide) that contains a lot of helpful information regarding the following topics among others:

  • Implementing XML (what is it, what is a DTD, what is a schema etc)
  • MISMO XML Architecture
  • Security Considerations
  • MISMO Transaction Envelope
  • XML Implementation Issues

It’s a great place to start if this is your first XML implementation or your first MISMO implementation.

Transaction Set Implementation Guide
Several of the transaction sets have an Implementation Guide (I-Guide) developed within the workgroup. The transaction specific I-Guide builds upon the general guide in that it walks you through the request and response structures in more detail. The guides also typically include information specific to the function point (e.g. understanding MI Plans), sample XML structures and a Frequently Asked Question section.

Document Type Definition / Schema
The DTD and Schemas both provide the means to define the structure of the XML file that can be used by the software developer to learn what the XML request and response files should look like. They can also be used to programmatically validate that the XML file your software created adheres to the structure defined by the standard. The Version 1.x and 2.x MISMO standards originally used only DTDs to define the XML. In recent releases however, the standards have included a “zero delta schema”. This schema does not leverage all functionality inherent in W3C schemas but rather enforces the same level of rules in the published DTD.

Sample XML Files
Some of the workgroups have provided sample XML files that illustrate what your XML should look like when you send it to or receive it from your trading partner. The sample XML files are included with the specifications where available.

Listservs / Email Distribution Lists
To keep abreast of new technical developments and current initiatives relating to the standards/transaction sets you have or will be implementing, it is recommended that you join the appropriate listservs. Listservs are the main medium used by MISMO Workgroups for communication. Each MISMO Workgroup maintains its own listserv and uses the technology for announcements and discussion forums on topics in their specific subject areas. Any person may sign up and participate on the MISMO listservs. To sign up and access helpful hints on using the listservs, please go to the Listserv Sign Up page.

Wiki
The idea behind a Wiki is to create a fast, collaborative, environment for individuals to share ideas, documents and content which would remain persistent. Wikis emphasize content, convenience, and accessibility and a higher level of collaboration than traditional software tools. MISMO's Wiki is used to manage the Version 3 MISMO Engineering Guidelines (MEGs), the Version 3 Architecture Task List, and other collateral items from various MISMO Workgroups. MISMO's Wiki is available to all MISMO participants. Potential users may visit http://wiki.mismo.org/MISMOWiki and create a user name and password after accepting MISMO's Intellectual Property Right policy.
