SMART Doc® Version 3

The acronym SMART represents: • Securable • Manageable • Archivable • Retrievable • Transferable

MISMO® published revisions to the SMART Doc® Version 3 PDF Implementation Guide on October 13, 2025.

Changes to the SMART Doc® Version 3 PDF Implementation Guide include corrections to typographical errors, clarifications to make the requirements more prescriptive, and removal of the Definitions section. Ensuring that the documentation is accurate and up-to-date supports MISMO’s continued support for SMART Doc® implementation.

The SMART Doc® Specification is a technical framework for representing documents in an electronic format. This format links data, the visual representation of the form, and signature. The visual representation of the documents can utilize a variety of technologies, such as XHTML, PDF, and TIFF. A SMART Doc can be secured to prevent tampering. Therefore, the Specification allows system validation to ensure that what the borrower sees and signs on the computer screen is the exact document that will be stored. It also ensures that the data displayed on the screen will be the exact data used for processing the loan.

The SMART DOC Version 3 Verifiable profile specification will help you create a pdf document that can be used when there is a requirement to verify that the data matches the information contained in the viewable image of the document.  This product can help you facilitate automated validation that the data and the related document have not been modified.
